MT - 2026 NEC Changes: Core Installation & Distribution Changes (PGM)
Course Description
This course provides an overview of significant changes and clarifications introduced in the 2026 National Electrical Code, with emphasis on code-wide updates, general installation requirements, branch circuits, feeders, and services. Participants will review new and deleted NEC articles, revised Article 100 definitions, the role of specific permission, and how NEC chapters and articles work together to support safe and compliant electrical installations.
The course also examines important updates related to product instructions, short-circuit current ratings, dissimilar metal connections, arc-flash labeling, equipment servicing, reconditioning, working space, and high-leg delta system markings. Additional topics include branch circuit conductor identification, GFCI and ground-fault protection requirements, dwelling unit and dormitory receptacle rules, lighting provisions, feeder and outside branch circuit requirements, building disconnecting means, service conductor sizing, service equipment, surge protection, meter sockets supplying fire pumps, and equipment permitted on the supply side of service disconnects.
By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared to interpret and apply 2026 NEC changes in real-world electrical installations while supporting safety, consistency, and code compliance.
Learning Objectives
Identify major code-wide changes in the 2026 NEC, including new and deleted articles and revised Article 100 definitions.
Explain how NEC chapters and articles interact, including the relationship between general requirements, branch circuits, feeders, and services.
Describe the role of specific permission and how it is applied throughout the NEC.
Explain the relationship between NEC requirements and manufacturer product instructions.
Recall general installation requirements related to short-circuit current ratings, dissimilar metal connections, high-leg delta markings, and connections over 1,000 volts.
Describe revised requirements for arc-flash labeling, equipment servicing, reconditioning, and working space.
Explain key branch circuit requirements, including conductor marking, GFCI protection, ground-fault protection of equipment, and 10-ampere branch circuit applications.
Apply NEC requirements for receptacles, lighting, and branch circuits in dwelling units, dormitories, electrical rooms, and other occupancies.
Explain how Article 215 and Article 225 work together to address feeders and outside branch circuits.
Describe requirements for building disconnecting means and branch circuits or feeders exceeding 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC.
Identify key service requirements, including listed equipment, minimum conductor sizing, line-side splicing rules, and service equipment requirements for dwellings.
Describe service-related protection and equipment provisions, including surge protection, meter sockets supplying fire pumps, and equipment allowed on the supply side of service disconnects.
